Repainting your home’s interior walls can refresh your living space in ways you’d never imagine, and it’s enticing to sit around and plan out your house’s dream look. However, one question that often comes up is: “How often do my walls need to be repainted?” The answer depends on a variety of factors, including the room’s function, the type of paint used, and the general wear and tear of the space. Here’s a brief breakdown of the ideal repainting timelines for various rooms throughout your home.

Low-Traffic Rooms

Think about the rooms within your home where you and others spend the least amount of time – dining rooms and guest bedrooms are two of the main ones that might come to mind, among others. These rooms don’t typically need to be repainted as often since they don’t experience as much people traffic or general wear and tear. You can expect to paint them every 7 or so years, or perhaps even longer if you’re able to maintain the quality of the paint. Like low-traffic rooms, the ceilings within your home also don’t need to be painted as often. You can often get away with waiting 10 years or so.

High-Traffic Rooms

On the flip side, high-traffic rooms need to be painted much more often than low-traffic areas. These rooms include main bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms, and hallways primarily; however, if there are any other spaces within your home that you and others frequent, you’ll want to keep them in mind as well. Try to repaint your hallways every 2 – 3 years since they’ll see the most usage and experience the most wear and tear. Kitchens are just as much of a priority, and every 3 to 5 years they can benefit from a fresh coat of paint. Most bedrooms and living rooms can go 5 or more years between paint jobs.

Other Key Considerations

You don’t want to forget bathrooms, laundry rooms, and utility rooms – although, these are somewhat special cases. Since these rooms are exposed more often to moisture and sometimes humidity, you’ll want to ensure the paint being used is water-based and up to the task. That said, aim to repaint these spaces every 5 years, to ensure that the paint remains intact and protects your foundation.

At the end of the day, how often you decide to repaint your walls also depends on personal preference – sometimes a change is in order, and you might not want to wait until your current paint starts to fade or show signs of wear. In any case, if you still have doubts about whether it’s time to repaint, don’t hesitate to speak with a team of professionals for their input and assistance; they’ll know best, and can also deliver fantastic and lasting results!
