Repainting your house is an exciting way to refresh and liven up your living space while also boosting your home’s value. However, it can become a challenging task when you’re a pet owner! Ensuring that they’re safe and comfortable throughout the whole process is crucial; however, you also want to be sure that at the end of the project, they aren’t able to influence your results! Continue reading below for a few useful tips for painting you

Tip #1. Use Toxic-Free Tints

While comparing your paint options, you’ll want to check every label carefully to ensure that you’re not using anything toxic. If you’re working with a team of professionals, you can ask them to confirm which brands they use and how safe they are for homes with pets. Typically, formulas made from natural ingredients like water, plant dyes, and essential oils are safer and do not contain VOC, or volatile organic compounds, meaning they won’t emit fumes harmful to you or your furry friends.

Tip #2. Choose a Stain-Proof Color

Choosing a color is the most exciting part of any painting project; however, pet owners will need to take a few extra things into consideration. For example, bright colors like red, green, and blue often show marks and smudges very easily, compared to darker neutral colors like brown, gray, and black. These tones uphold a cleaner look since most scratches and messes will blend in, mostly unnoticed. On the other hand, if you prefer brighter or lighter colors, you’ll need to spend a little more time cleaning them since the marks will be more visible. There’s no real wrong answer here; just take advantage of paint sample sticks as needed and consider your pet’s behavior to make an informed choice.

Tip #3. Carefully Consider Your Sheen

Color is only part of the equation; you’ll also need to carefully weigh your options when it comes to which sheen to select. With so many choices, including satin, semi-gloss, gloss, matte, and more, you might feel overwhelmed. That said, you probably won’t want fully reflective walls – semi-gloss and satin finishes seem to have the perfect amount of luster to deflect or hide smudges that pets (or people) leave.

Tip #4. Maintain Your New Paint

Months after you’ve selected the right paint and finished transforming your home, you might notice that your pets have made their presence known via marks, scuffs, dings, and scratches on your painted walls! This is pretty much impossible to prevent unless you have some of the most well-trained dogs and cats on the planet; however, it’s pretty easy to address. Touch-up kits and paint solvents exist for these situations but be mindful of when it’s time to repaint in the future. Also do what you can to protect and maintain your walls; clean them often, don’t push furniture directly up against them, and be extra mindful of high-traffic rooms.
